Japanese Yen Intervention: Mimura Signals Japan Will Do Whatever It Takes To Protect The Yen
The Japanese yen continues to remain at the center of attention in the foreign exchange market, following Japan’s latest intervention around the 160 area in USDJPY and the increasingly aggressive messages coming out of Tokyo in recent days.
While some traders believed Japan might hesitate to carry out additional interventions within a short period of time, the latest messages from officials appear to indicate the exact opposite.
The “Three Interventions Per Year” Rule
According to International Monetary Fund guidelines, a country can generally carry out up to three interventions in the foreign exchange market per year while still being considered to have a free-floating currency.
However, there is an important detail here that many market participants are not aware of.
When several interventions are carried out within a short period of time and as part of the same currency defense move, they may effectively be considered a single intervention rather than a series of separate interventions.
This means Japan may still have significantly more room to act than some market participants currently estimate.
The Man Delivering The Message To The Market
One of the most important figures regarding foreign exchange interventions in Japan is Atsushi Mimura, Japan’s Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs.
In recent days, Mimura has delivered particularly aggressive messages to the foreign exchange market.
According to reports, he clarified that Japan has no limitation on the frequency or scale of interventions if necessary, and that the Japanese government is prepared to take the required measures to deal with excessive speculative moves in the currency market.
In addition, he emphasized that Japanese authorities are monitoring the foreign exchange market with an extremely high sense of urgency.
Markets tend to take such statements very seriously, especially following the latest intervention near the 160 area.
Price Behavior Since The Latest Intervention

Since Japan’s latest intervention slightly above the 160 area in USDJPY, a clear change in price behavior can be observed.
Instead of continuing a stable upward trend, the market repeatedly forms a similar pattern in which several small or medium green candles appear, as if the market is trying to attract new buyers and restore confidence among long positions.
However, shortly afterward, a sharp and aggressive red spike almost always appears, pulling the price rapidly lower.
From a technical perspective, this type of behavior signals clear weakness among buyers at higher price levels, especially when every recovery attempt is quickly rejected and followed by renewed selling pressure.
Japan Appears To Be Trying To Break Speculators’ Confidence
It is very possible that Japan’s objective is not only to push USDJPY lower in the short term.
It appears authorities are also attempting to create fear and uncertainty among traders holding aggressive long USDJPY positions.
Every new attempt to approach the 160 area now feels increasingly dangerous for the market, especially after the sharp spikes seen in recent days.
The Technical Target Remains Clear
In our view, as long as the current structure continues to appear, the higher probability remains for further downside in USDJPY.
Our primary technical target remains a test of the daily 200 moving average, which is considered a highly significant technical area following such a sharp and prolonged rally.
